Retro flair in our newest display home
Jun, 2025Fun and warmth abound in this modern kitchen featuring seamless mid-century moments.
When so many contemporary kitchens are white and minimal, one with character can feel like a breath of fresh air. The Rubik’s Studio in Balcatta, from Residential Attitudes, blends family functionality with its homeowners’ personalities.
Senior designer Michal Kurtis says the display home’s kitchen is a bold, retro-inspired space, which balances nostalgia with modern convenience, for a “playful yet practical” feel.
“Don’t be afraid to mix nostalgic touches with contemporary finishes and definitely consider the layout”
Character comes from colour and texture, including feature tiles, open shelves to showcase beloved cookbooks and mementos and an island bench with seating for family and friends. Kurtis says the goal was to create a hub that connected seamlessly with the living and outdoor areas and provided essentials such as hidden prep areas and clever storage. “Open shelving and a dedicated tea and coffee station adds a sense of individuality and convenience,” says Kurtis
“The servery acts as both a functional prep bench and a social connector, creating visual openness between the kitchen, living and dining zones.” Love the look? Kurtis advises colour, curves or statement pieces that reflect your personality. “Don’t be afraid to mix nostalgic touches with contemporary finishes and definitely consider the layout; a well-placed scullery or servery can be a game changer for both flow and function.”
